Incredibly Glossy Hair

After having the flu a few weeks ago, I noticed my skin and hair were in much need of some TLC - both were as dry as could be.  I put together this hair mask recipe that literally made me toss ALL other recipes I've ever concocted to the side.   If your strands are in need of major repair and moisture, try this rich and healing hair mask ~ you won't be disappointed!

Ingredients:

• 3 teaspoons white vinegar
• 2 teaspoons raw honey
• 3 drops rosemary essential oil
• 1 egg
• 1 teaspoon real mayonnaise
• 1/2 avocado
• 1 teaspoon pure extra virgin coconut oil

Mix all ingredients together, then apply mixture to damp hair from roots to ends.  Leave on for 5-10 minutes or longer for drier hair.  Rinse.  Follow with your regular shampoo and conditioner (both completely natural or organic I hope!).  Apply 100% Pure Argan Oil to damp hair to smooth strands and add LOTS of volume!

DIY Natural Penetrating Chest Rub

Toss the OTC meds for common colds!  Synthetically suppressing cold symptoms could not only bring about other illnesses like liver disease and kidney issues, but it prevents the body from properly healing and doing its job of ridding itself of phlegm and germs and fills your children's bodies with dangerous artificial dyes weakening the immune system and actually lengthening the life of the virus.

With the kids back to school and flu season right around the corner, this DIY organic decongestant is sure to come in handy and naturally relieve nasal congestion and help to clear/break up mucus that settles in the back of the throat and in the chest. 

When my children get colds and noses get stuffy, I mix 1 heaping  tablespoon of coconut oil and 8-9 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil in a bowl and rub on their chest and place a warm heating pad (or warm washcloth) over the chest for about 10-15 minutes before they go to bed.  This mixture was especially great when my daughter suffered from asthma in her younger years.  

AMAZING TIP: A great tip many people aren't aware of is to also take the same mixture and rub on the bottoms of feet and slip on a pair of thick cozy socks. When the mixture is applied to feet, it settles coughs throughout the night so your little on can get a good night's rest.

After one to two nights of applying this mixture, you're little one will probably begin to cough quite heavily as the mucus will begin to break up and loosen.  Encourage him to cough out the phlegm and spit (preferrably into the toilet to prevent the spreading of germs) to help speed up the healing process.

Just another PHENOMENAL use for coconut oil!

Works wonders for adults as well.  Please spot test prior to use for allergies and don't use more eucalyptus oil than suggested or can cause skin irritation.

Holy Basil!

Recently, I've discovered the astounding benefits of basil - not just any old supermarket bought basil but, more specifically, Holy Basil or Thyme Basil as it's sometimes called.  Holy basil contains more beneficial compounds the basic basil but if you can't find the oh so holy kind, regular basil will do.  Because I use basil for its other beneficial uses besides beauty, I readily have it available at home.  If you do not have fresh basil leaves (which I highly recommend), you can purchase basil essential oil as a substitute.

One of my FAVORITE ways I've been using Holy basil lately is as a blemish eraser!    I've cleared up breakouts by boiling a handful of basil in 1 cup of water for about 10 minutes, allowing it to cool, dipping a cotton ball into the liquid, and then dabbing on breakout zones.  I wait approximately 10 more minutes before splashing with water to rinse.  I did this morning and night for a week or so and Holy cow - clear skin!

Holy basil's oil is antiseptic, antibacterial, and an antioxidant which all helps to combat pimples.  It's a super source of iron too making it a great addition to your raw spinach salads to boost iron levels during menstruation.  Holy basil has also been found to detoxify your liver so adding it to cleansing raw juicing and smoothie recipes for an extra detox kick.  Basil has also been found to have anti anxiety effects (lowers cortisol levels) with the phytochemicals it contains.  Try adding a few leaves to your steeping tea to calm and relieve stress. 

Can't go wrong with these greens...unless you are pregnant or breastfeeding!  If you are, please discuss basil usage with your doctor. :)

Nature's superfood blessing for skin & hair

It's so nice to be able to find a product that is both organic and has multiple uses!  Can your products do double or even triple duty?  Argan Oil remains one of the rarest oils in the world.  Many major cosmetic companies have been including the smallest traces of the oil in their products in order to market them as an "Argan Oil" item and profit of its recent popularity - while many others have bottled it pure and charged a pretty penny for it (such as Josie Maran's 1.7oz bottle for $48!).

Vitamin E (tocopherol). Argan Oil is astoundingly rich in Vitamin E, a potent antioxidant which helps slow the process of lipids from the destructive effects of oxygen (oxidation) as well as other environmental effects. Vitamin E is naturally occurring in skin, and helps the skin function as a water-proof barrier. With age and exposure to sun and pollution, this barrier is broken down and causes a lack of moisture, which damages the skin’s lipids. Many skincare products contain synthetic vitamin E, which helps keep skin hydrated and soft, however it is no match for naturally derived vitamin E, such as that found in Argan Oil.

Here are just a few of its beneficial properties:


Essential Fatty Acids. Argan Oil is also incredibly rich in essential fatty acids, which have been scientifically proven to be beneficial both when taken orally, but also when applied topically to skin. Not having enough EFAs can cause conditions in which the skin becomes flaky, dry, scaly and uncomfortable; conditions like psoriasis and eczema, as well as acne. EFAs have an anti-inflammatory effect on skin, and also increase suppleness, elasticity and youthful appearance and relieve painful skin conditions. Exposure to UV also decreases the skin’s EFAs, and so treating sun damaged skin with Argan Oil has been shown to repair damage to photo-aged skin, as well as on scarring.


For hair, EFAs prevent breakage and promote smooth and supple strands by increasing moisture content, which is the single best thing that can be done for your hair. Carotene. Carotene, found in Argan Oil, as well as in many fruits and veggies, is a precursor to vitamin A. It is effective as an anti-aging ingredient in cosmetics, by protecting the skin from sun damage, and undoing damage already done. It also helps even skin tone, and adds a healthy glow. For hair, it counteracts fragility, reduces split ends and encourages a healthy sparkle.


Squalene. Squalene is found naturally in all plants and animals. As an additive in cosmetics, it penetrates skin easily and is absorbed readily, without leaving a greasy residue and is non-irritating. It does not cause skin to breakout, and is effective in healing scar tissue and preventing stretch marks. Squalene may also reduce hair loss and is a highly effective conditioning agent.

Splenda is Poison

I've written numerous posts on Stevia Imposters because I assumed most people were already aware of the horrible effects Splenda (sucralose) has on your entire body and made the switch to all natural Stevia.  (Please note:  Truvia and Purvia are chemically engineered just as Splenda is!)

But based on sales of Splenda packets and products that include Splenda, I was sadly mistaken. Corporations have continued to deceive you by adding Splenda to a vast array of products and do not have to label it as including Splenda.  Instead, they have chosen to add "sucralose" to the ingredients list knowing most have no clue what sucralose is.  From children's juices to "lite" or sugar-free snacks and cereals - they have managed to add sucralose to MOST processed foods!  PLEASE BE AWARE AND READ LABELS:  SUCRALOSE = SPLENDA = TOXIC!

Pure Stevia and xylitol are all natural sweeteners that must replace any artificial sweetener you are currently using!

Love Organix Shampoos & Conditioners?

I'm sure you've all seen these short wide bottles in your grocery store as they've been flying off the shelves recently.  So much so, in fact, Vogue International has expanded their shampoo and conditioner line dramatically thanks to your repeated purchases.  The packaging, fragrance, and tag line alone are enough to draw people into the shampoo's and conditioners.

The company first introduced their line with their Coconut Milk Shampoos, Conditioners and frizz serums.  Now they have a wide variety of "natural ingredient" scents and formulas for different hair needs.  Their beautiful website's homepage reads, "For all who aspire to make better choices and are more aware of the integrity of ingredients.  Organix formulas contain organic active ingredients and are sulfate free and paraben free...plus they smell absolutely incredible!"

They are certainly right about one thing, they do smell delightful.  They have an innovative bottle design, big bucks to back their marketing campaign, award after award from numerous magazines they've been featured in and an attractive website BUT...

Does Vogue International consider their high amounts of DMDM Hydantoin and fragrance a better choice?  Are those that are "more aware of the integrity of ingredients" aware that the potency of the fragrance in each of their products has cancer warnings written all over it?  Fragrance is usually listed as one of the last ingredients on most personal care products.  Not Vogue!  They added LOTS of fragrance to theirs so much so it's pushed half way up the list to please the scenses of their consumers.  Are "those" aware that DMDM Hydantoin is one of the first 5 ingredients on EWG's list of ingredients to COMPLETELY AVOID? 

Not all of their line has an EWG Cosmetic Database Rating yet because it's so new but I'd like to take the time to highlight for you the winners of the highest rated (most dangerous) ingredients from the information that is currently available on Organix products. 

Let's take a look at 3 ingredients in all of their products (with the exception of cocamide DEA which is found in their "Nourishing Coconut Milk Shampoo"):

1.  DMDM Hydantoin (EWG Rating 7) - DMDM hydantoin is an organic* compound belonging to a class of compounds known as hydantoins. It is used in the cosmetics industry in shampoos, hair conditioners, hair gels and skin care products.  DMDM hydantoin works as a preservative because the released formaldehyde makes the environment less favorable to the microorganisms.

Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has evaluated DMDM hydantoin and concluded "that it was safe to a great majority of consumers but has limited the concentration to 0.2% free formaldehyde due to the skin sensitivity of some individuals** to this agent." A study found "An increase in the use of DMDM hydantoin in cosmetic products will also inevitable increase the risk of cosmetic dermatitis in consumers allergic to formaldehyde."  

*   OH, I get it, this is one of their ingredients they consider "organic" LOL.

** Only some people are allergic to toxic formaldehyde.  That's a new one!  I guess because cancer isn't considered an allergy, this statement is valid. LOL

2. Fragrance (EWG Rating 8) - Not only is fragrance a known human immune system toxicant but the major problem with this is when a company lists fragrance as an ingredient, they are not fully telling you what makes up that fragrance.  It is a way for them not to fully list all ingredients as it is argued to be a "trade secret".

3.  Cocamide DEA, or cocamide diethanolamine (EWG Rating 6) - A diethanolamide made by reacting the mixture of fatty acids from coconut oils with diethanolamine. (Not NATURAL 100% coconut oil which does WONDERS for hair, skin and scalp!)  It is used as a foaming agent in bath products like shampoos and hand soaps, and in cosmetics as an emulsifying agent.  Cocamide DEA is an allergen that may cause contact dermatitis in individuals who are susceptible to skin allergies. Cocamide DEA showed a high irritation potential.

Conclusion:  Organix products aren't all that natural and organic like their name leads one to believe.  They are very far from safe (especially for use on children). 

Please don't fall prey to marketing ploys such as Organix' clever name used to attract more sales and naive consumers.  They sure took advantage of the most popular "natural" ingredient trends such as acai berry, moroccan argan oil, brazilian keratin, coconut milk,  pomegranate, green tea and many others.  Buyers beware!  Organix is NOT the only guilty party of false claims and advertising - there are so many others!

READ THE INGREDIENTS NOT THE SLOGANS!  Know which are most dangerous and they will then stand out on the labels as if highlighted by your brain!  Don't buy a product because it smells wonderful or you'll pay with a whole lot more than your hard earned money!

The Power of Cilantro

Recently I noticed I began to use cilantro at unprecedented levels in my cooking because I am craving it in large amounts.  I've always used it in sauces, salsas and marinades but never to extent of my recent usage amounts. Why the heck am I starting to naturally crave this herb?

It is possible that I am deficient in one of its many minerals or vitamins which include vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, iron, carotene, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, sodium, potassium, oxalic acid.  Cilantro leaves also contain protein, fat, fiber, carbohydrates, and water. Or maybe I'm just craving the zing of its flavor.

So I've resurrected its' importance in my daily diet despite my husband's claim that its distinctive flavor tastes much like dishwasher detergent.  Not sure how much detergent he's consumed in his life to back that statement. :)

Many people are unaware of the super health benefits of cilantro and coriander seeds (FYI - cilantro is grown from coriander seeds). 

Cilantro is considered to be a major cleanser of the body in ridding heavy metals such as mercury, lead and aluminum.  Cilantro is also a blood cleaner and aids in natural chelation therapy. 

Coriander seed and cilantro leaves have many known health benefits and researchers are finding more every day.

Here are a few of its known benefits:

• Protects against the Salmonella bacteria
• Reportedly works as a natural chelation treatment
• Aids in digestion and helps settle the stomach and prevent flatulence
• Is an anti-inflammatory that may alleviate symptoms of arthritis
• Protects against urinary tract infections

Coriander seeds are also known to reduce fevers by providing a feeling of coolness.

In addition, the drinking of coriander water helps lower blood cholesterol. It is prepared by boiling dry seeds of coriander and straining them after cooling, then drinking the liquid like a tea..much like a coriander seed "tea".

Coriander seeds are known to alleviate excessive menstrual flow. Also, used as an eye-wash, freshly dried coriander is an excellent in treating pink eye. It relieves burning and reduces pain and swelling.

*As a beauty treatment,  a teaspoon of coriander juice, mixed with a pinch of turmeric powder and applied topically is an effective remedy for pimples, blackheads and dry skin. The mixture should be applied to the face after washing it thoroughly every night before going to bed until the stubborn pimple or dry skin disappears.

Who knew how great cilantro actually is for us and to our overall health??

Spring has sprung & so have lice

I don't know anyone that isn't welcoming spring with open arms after this past treacherous winter!  BUT -

along with the beauty of blooming flowers and greenery...

Spring brings BUGS - CREEPY CRAWLIES!

LICE infestations are at an all time high during spring and continue flourishing during summer months.  The kids' school has an outbreak every year around this time as many other schools and people have experienced all over the world for the last 145,000,000 years.

I am PARANOID of these nasty, prehistoric little bugs and have researched repeatedly, drilled our pediatrician and made my kids endure weeks of trial and error in order for me to find all natural prevention methods that REALLY WORK!

Therefore, I thought I'd share our prevention methods (based on the conclusion of all my research) that have worked wonders for us so far and have kept our kids free and clear of these yuckies.

EVERY morning I dampen the kids' hair and lather it with coconut oil!  Lice hate dirty, oily and product filled hair.  They LOVE clean hair because it is easier for them to cling to firmly!  Gels and mouses with alcohol might work as well but are loaded with chemicals that damage children's hair so the coconut oil is a great, gentle option and deep conditions while it's fighting off critters.  Lice repellents that are sold in stores DO NOT work and are also loaded with toxins!

Use the coconut oil as a gel and put hair in a tight bun or braids as often as possible during the spring and summer months.  We also use a dab of 100% rosemary oil behind each ear and a dab at the nape of the neck since its scent naturally repels all types of bugs.

You should also shampoo and condition hair with products that contain tea tree oil or put a few drops of 100% tea tree oil in the shampoos and conditioners you already use.  Tea tree oil is another bug enemy.  If you opt for adding a few drops of tea tree oil yourself, make sure it's mixed well into the shampoo or conditioner because tea tree oil can irritate sensitive scalps.  100% pure tea tree oil should NEVER be applied directly to the scalp or skin; it could cause rashes or burns.

If your child does happen to get lice, PLEASE DO NOT use any of the over-the-counter lice shampoos.  Pesticide based lice shampoos contain ingredients which are known to cause cancer, affect the nervous system, and have other harmful effects. They can trigger asthma or allergic responses. Children, especially those with asthma and allergies, are more vulnerable than adults to these chemicals.

Seizures, behavioral changes, attention deficit disorders, brain injury, skin diseases, and even death have been reported to the United States-based National Pediculosis Association's registry by people who have used chemical treatments to get rid of head lice or scabies.

The scalp is one of the most absorbent parts of the body.  Products applied to the scalp go directly to the blood, without being filtered in any way.  There are shampoos and kits available at all natural health food stores to rid your hair of lice.  Just please read the ingredients to be sure it is indeed natural and chemical free.
